What is a card
A card is a bank account access instrument. By using your card your money is safe and you have 24/7 access to it.
What can you do with your card?
Pay for goods and services at merchant locations: you can pay for goods and services wherever you see the logo that appears on your card (i.e. Visa, Maestro, etc.). Paying at merchant locations is fast, using a terminal called EPOS, or an Imprinter , which provides a link with the bank account attached to your card.
The steps you have to take in order to pay using your card:
- Make sure the store where you wish to pay using your card accepts the type of card you have (verify that it has the logo that appears on your card on its front door).
- Ask for the products you want and then hand the cashier your card.
- The cashier will pass your card through a reader device (EPOS or Imprinter), will enter the total amount of the purchase and will request your Personal Identification Number (PIN code) - if the transaction is done using an EPOS.
- A receipt will be issued immediately, confirming payment using your card.
- Verify the amount on the receipt and sign it.
- If the amount on the receipt is incorrect, refuse to sign the receipt and immediately demand that the transaction be cancelled.
You can get cash from ATMs or from bank tellers at accepting banks. If you use another bank's ATM or bank teller make sure that bank accepts the type of card you have.
Just like when confirming your payment at EPOS-equipped merchants, getting cash is conditioned by inserting your PIN code.
You can use other services via your card (depending on the type of card), such as: paying various invoices, receiving your salary, receiving interest on bank deposits, obtaining an overdraft, paying online, ordering automated transfers to other accounts of yours, etc.
How many types of cards are there?
Depending on their currency Romanian cards can be in either RON or foreign currency (EUR or USD)
Depending on the client, there can be cards for individuals or for legal entities
Depending on how they work, they can be:
- Debit cards: cards that allow payments or cash withdrawals up to the limit available in the account.
Under this category we also find a special case, if the card is used to receive your salary on it: the overdraft debit card The cardholder has access to his own funds (his/her monthly salary) and to a loan equal to a certain percentage of his/her salary.
- Credit cards: the cardholder has an approved credit limit and spends funds made available by the bank. Interest is paid only for money effectively used and there is usually a minimum percentage of the loan that has to be repaid every month.
Depending on where the cards can be used:
- Domestic cards - RON cards that can only be used in Romania.
- International cards - cards that can be used anywhere in the world where you see the logo that appears on your card. These cards can be in foreign currency or in RON (you deposit RON on your card and the currency exchange is done automatically when paying abroad).
How is card transaction security provided?
Every card has a PIN code (Personal Identification Number). EPOS payments or cash withdrawals only take place after this code has been entered. Entering your PIN code incorrectly 3 times will result in the blocking of your card.
The PIN code should never be revealed to anybody, under any circumstances.
For Imprinter transactions security is provided by the requirement to sign the receipts created when the card is used.
Loss, theft or destruction of the card should be notified immediately at the bank's service phone number, which is printed on the card, so that the bank can block access to the account via that payment instrument in its systems.
Renewing your card
Every card has a validity period (usually 2 years). At the end of this time period the card is automatically renewed. The new card can be picked up at the bank unit that issued the card.
